Hello, I have been having quite a bit of pain & burning on my left side and bottom of my rib cage. Does any one know what this could be? I'm looking in to seeing a gastroenerolgist. Thanks so much. Lorray

Thanks.

hi, I have been experiencing a dull ache and burning sensation above my left breast and burning just under the right and left side of my ribs. I visited the doctor who queried gastritis and prescribed me omeprazole to reduce the aacid in my stomach. My symptoms are much better although i still the burning above my left breast, which i guess is heartburn. I have to take the omeprazole for 2 months to give my stomach wall enough time to heal. I suggest you visit you doctor and get yourself checked out i'm glad that i did because i was starting to get quite worried about it.

Hope this helps. Sares

Hi

I took omeprazole 40mg for 1 month, when i came off them, i went onto a step down dose of 20mg. I'm now off them completely and the pain seems to have cleared up. I do occasionally get a few twinges and strange sensations, but i'm not sure if its the same thing or not.

How long have you had the burning?

Sares.

I seem to be having the same problems. As I am sitting here at the computer I notice them more. When standing up it is releived a little.

I would be interested to hear of ways in which people overcame this irritating problem and what it was/is ?

Hi
I'm back on 20mg omeprazole to keep the acid at bay. I keep getting the strange sensation below my left rib and wonder if it's a hernia.

I notice that the sensation comes on more often toward the end of the day and I also feel it more when i'm seated.

I have the same problem with the discomfort on the left side. I have found however, that taking probiotics and 2 tablespoons of apple-cider vinegar in a glass of warm water in the morning has helped tremendously.

Costochondritis is a problem that they said I had, its associate with fibermyalga. Mine is lower than alot of you describe. They say that it is caused by the inflamed place where the rib connect. mine is very low rib and almost under my rib. The doc said its usually higher so i am going for an xray

I'm not a doctor but if it's on your right side it may be a gallstone. I've had around 3 "attacks" that I didn't know what the heck they were and then recently the doctor found a large gallstone when I had a CT done.

I am to a little frustrated that no one has come up with an answer for this after so many posts.

I've been getting mild pain (a burning feeling that flares up and then subsides and then repeats) this is on my left side. It almost feels as though my lower part of the rib cage is jabbing it. I found this happened more when I was sitting up and it usually went away if I stood or laid down. Now it's getting to the point that it stay's while i'm laying down and has spread to my back.

here's some sites that may help us all

I've experienced the left side burning sensation on and off for years. The location has varied, with the burning being at the bottom of the rib cage, slightly higher behind the ribs, sometimes more towards the back, or even lower than the rib cage. You might press on your left ribs to try to alleviate the burning, but of course it doesn't go away. You might wake up in the middle of the night with the burning or it might happen hours after you've eaten. It may be accompanied with a loss of appetite, fatigue, and sometimes nausea. Here is what I've learned on my burning journey. As always, consult your doctor to properly diagnose yourself.

For me, it's been gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining. The causes probably aren't going to be the same for everyone. There can be several causes. The food you eat can trigger it. Foods that are spicy or acidic can aggravate the condition. Citrus fruits (orange juice), chocolate, drinks with caffeine or alcohol, fatty and fried foods, garlic and onions, spicy foods and tomato-based foods can be a problem. Tomato sauce is my biggest trigger food and I needed to avoid it. Stress has been a contributor and a stressful day is more likely to result in burning for me. Certain medications, like aspirin, can irritate your stomach. Lifting weights, performing abs exercises, and constantly bending over may also aggravate your condition, especially if you have GERD / acid reflux along with the burning sensation. Sitting at a desk and not having the proper posture (leaning forward) may add to the burning, just as wearing tight fitting clothing can be a problem. Basically, if your stomach lining is irritated, you need to provide it an environment that allows it to heal.

Treating it to avoid burning in the short term should fairly easy. I have found that taking one pepcid complete when experiencing burning has taken care of it quickly and for the rest of the day. Alternatively I've taken it before going to bed to prevent any burning overnight. I'm sure there are other antacids that also work, but the tricky part will be finding something that reduces acid immediately and hours later.

The hardest part is staying consistent with treatment long enough to give your stomach the time it needs to heal. Try to eat a bland diet (you should be able to search the internet for "bland diet" and get ideas) and avoid the foods mentioned above. If eating at night, wait 2 to 3 hours before going to bed and allow your food to digest before laying down. Bananas are good to eat and at times I've eaten one to address burning. I had to avoid drinking orange juice and was drinking water instead. Although recently I've found something that's even better to drink: coconut water. I've found it to be better because it has a lower ph and it contains nutrients that you need. Unfortunately it's more expensive and not as easy to find (the brand I buy is Zico). Exercise is key to beating this long term. Specifically, aerobic exercise. I've found that if I experience burning, getting on a treadmill or elliptical machine for 20 minutes gets rid of it. I try to exercise 20 mins 5 times a week.

The goal will be staying burning sensation free for several weeks. Yes, it may take weeks for your stomach to heal. Once you do that you should be able to gradually eat normally again (within reason). I've found that continuing to exercise regularly will help keep gastritis in check, increase energy and reduce stress.

Have any of you been tested and or treated for
H Pylori - Its a bacterial infection that frequently causes inflamation of the stomach lining and little ulcerations. For years people were being treated for peptic ulcers with acid inhibitors etc when all along the problem was this nasty little bug. The treatment is simple - flagyl, pepto bismol and tetracycline for an extended period of time.

I have the same problem also, which is left side pain on the rin with a burning sensation. I was a doctor yesterday, and first of all he told me any burning sensation is always something ahs to do with nurves. he was very good testing and checking me, by Xray for example. It turned out to be spasm in the muscles that covers the ribsm that causes some tention in the nurves as well so it caused the pain and burning sensation. So in conclusion, it s nothing seriouse or to worry about. Ciao

I went to the doctor this morning with a problem like this and he solved it. I had an extreme burning sensation under my left breast that seemed to get worse when I reached down for something with my left arm. When I told my doctor, he immediately said "oh, you've got a dislocated Rib". He started pressing on my back until he found a spot that was slightly tender/painful to the touch. The then had me lay down, and turn on my right side. While keeping his finger on the tender spot on my back, he rotated my upper body until it was facing the ceiling and then pressed down. My back popped and he said "I got it!". I stood up and felt as good as new! I have no idea how I dislocated a rib, but the doc said he once threw his entire back out by picking up a towel on the floor. At any rate, it's fixed, and I hope this helps someone else! Thanks!

I was rear ended and my car was shoved into the car in front of me causing the air bags to deploy and the seat belt to tighten up on my chest I have suffered with burning in my rib cage, back,I see a Chiropractor, and also a Acupunturist that helps me deal with the pain, and pain management. my doctors told me I will proably have the pain the rest of my life my pain level on a good day is 5 on a bad day 7 8 9...

I too have the pain many of you have described. It started after jogging a few years ago. I have had every test know to man and they can't find anything. I can only get relief from taking tramadol. They problem with it is you build up a resistance over a period of time and it takes more and more pills to relieve the pain. A lot of doctors don't understand the pain and won 't prescribe enough pills go give you relief. Luckily I have a doctor that does understand and gives me what I need, but keeps a check on my liver to make sure there is no damage there. I have tried other pain pills, but only tramadol works. It is very strange.

pain in the left side under rib cage or up into breast can be an ovarian cyst. Also, Gallbladder attacks can cause symptoms on left even though dr's say it is mostly on right....I know someone that had pain on left.

I recently felt really sick they other day... Didn't notice it until later that night. I had eaten fried seafood from the night before and cashews.
My smyptoms are a
*buring sensation on the left side under my breast
*alittle from time to time on the right side same area
*burning in my stomach
* burning on the left side of my back around the rib area
*discomfort on the right side right under my stomach
*shortness of breath and sometimes nausea....

FYI: I took a water pill that helps with bloating, fullness and pressure. It helped relieve gas pressure and it actually made me feel better. Took 2 today and it didn't do the same for me..

Does anyone know what this may be???

I noticed the same discomfort several months ago but about a month ago, I went on a jalapeno & hot wing fest over a weekend and it was more intense. I believe it to be stomach related but am going to the Dr. next week, on a scale from 1 to 10,(10 being unbearable), it ranges about a 1 or a 2. Am careful not to eat acidy foods for awhile until this goes away, anyone else?

My doctor put me on a low fat diet but said if the pain gets to be really bad then it will have to come out. The low fat diet is working well for me. Maybe you could try a low fat diet?

I have been ill now for 3 months, about 8 months ago I had this real bad pain in my left abdo. Later on I was passing blood, with out even using the bathroom. The doctor said it was nothing to worry about,so I didn't. Around Christmas I noticed that I was getting alot of gas, indigestion and fatigue. I took ill on January 28, 2009, I went to the hospital with back and abdo pain. They did a urine test and fund that I had WBC, puss and protein which they diagnosed as UTI, I was given antibiotics which cleared up my urine, but I was still not feeling well, so back to the hositpal I went, they done blood work and said that my WBC was high which indicated an infection. They examed my pelvic area and diagnosed my with PID. I just recently had a colonoscopy which was normal. In the last two and a half months I have been experiencing the following systoms and I would some advise.
-white mucus with blood in stool
-burning sensation under my rid cage (goes from right to left)
-tenderness to touch under my belly button
-I get fatigued everything I eat
-Dehydrated

I've had this same problem for years, I did some research online and found out about the apple cider vinegar but it tasted awful so I put one teaspoon in about half a glass of orange juice it keeps the acv taste down to a minimum. and over the time I've been doing this my pain has gradually eased off. And now when I feel it starting up or coming back i repeat it and helps wonderfully! hope this helps.

Wow, I am sorry you are all having these problems but at the same time I am happy to find some people experiencing the same thing that I have. I take Nexium for GERD. About 9 months ago, I started having a dull ache under my right rib which has graduated to a burning under my rib which radiates to my right side under rib and also to the left side. I have tried to come up with what is causing it and it seems to come and go.. The Dr. says probably my gall bladder but.. the other night I had fish & chips and fried clams and I had no pain. If it were my gall bladder I would think that would have hurt. I am getting scared thinking maybe its my lungs because I smoke or maybe its cancer... I dont know what to do. I put on the nicotine patch as smoking seems to make it worse. Please, any with any suggestions, please reply tolaw.buff@hotmail.com as I am unsure if I will find my way back to this site for a response. Thank you very much.

I went to the doctor a little over a month ago with the same burning pain around my lower left rib and a bit in between them. I was told I had a ulcer and was given prevacid. I took it for a month which is what she told me to do and here I am a little over 2 weeks after I stopped taking it and the pains are back. Lucky for me she gave me a refill so my best advice is to see your doctor and ask if it could be a ulcer. And if they give you pills take them as long as they fill them for. Oh and def. watch what you eat. It helps to just drink water and stick to bland foods. Stay away from anything with tomato in it, acidic, spicy, or with too much sugar.

I found this happened more when I was sitting up and it usually went away if I stood or laid down. Now it's getting to the point that it stay's while i'm laying down and has spread to my back.
here's some sites that may help us all

I am having the SAME thing! I went to the hospital yesterday & they said my bloodwork looked fine but I wanna know what the heck is going on so I can get rid of the pain! Did you ever find out what was your problem? They told me it might be an ulcer.

I am 17yrs old and I have been experiencing a burning sensation in my left side for many years. I also have scoliosis, and it seems they may be related, though docs have no idea what the cause is. The pain comes every morning, and lasts for hours on end. It can get so severe that I have to miss school. If anyone knows anything about this, please email me atshewhowalkswiththee@yahoo.com

Mike wrote:
Thanks for the tips Mike, i'll give them a try!

I was just reading these posts and several of you have some of the symptoms of shingles. It can cause pain and burning feelings along the bottom of the ribs on your back and around the side. My son had shingles in the 8th grade and it was severely painful. If you are experiencing a rash in addition to the pain, it is quite likely.

Hi
my father has sergery a few years back and has to have his left kidney romoved because of kidney cancer. he has a large scar on his lower left side of his abdomine. they has to romove his lower rib on his left side because his kidney was inflamed to the size of a football.
a few moments ago, a attemted to sneeze. doing so caused a burning sensation around the scar site (lower left side of stomache, below the removed rib) when i asked if he was alright, he said, "when i attemted to sneeze, it felt like my side was on fire!" i asked him what do you mean? he replyed, "i feels like someone lit a match and placed paper in here and let it burn." what is going on? he has scar tissue and an olser, but this has to be something more extreme. he has been to doctors plenty times before all stating it is stress related and get rest. well he has been in bed for three days before he started throwing up blood and repeatedly passing out in his bed. we went to the hostipal, waited in the wating room for three hours and when they finally emmitted him, they said the same thing as previously, it's stress and get rest. they also said the blood in vomit could be a result of dehydration and smoking cigarettes. they said cigarettes blisstered his esophagus. the olser could has cracked as well.
if you woul please get back to me with advise and answers.

My step-mom had the same symptoms as I do. I have burning and inflamation under my left rib. She had a galbladder problem and got it out then still had the pain and they said her stomach was being pushed up through a hernia and got surgery to have a screen put across her body. She still has the pain. I am not sure if I want to see a doctor, they seem like a bunch of lying money chasing liars. My son was diagnosed with crohnes disease. Right away they want to operate and give him steroids. We looked into this and the medical profession cannot give me 1 patient they have cured with surgery and steroids. We put him on fish oil, and acidophiles and he watches what he eats, no spicy and all that and he is doing fine. It's been 6 years. The other people that did what the doctors said are on colostomy bags and suffering. I do not trust doctors. Do they tell the truth or just making money. A hospital murdered my grandmother, we fought with them but they killed her right in front of us.
ps. I hurt mostly when I am sitting.

Left side burning sensation for about 3 months, shirts irritate it, sometimes a sharp tabbing pain, has been there for 2 months, been to medical doc and 2 chiropractors,Med doc, after x rays and blood work, says maybe pinched nerve, one chiropractor agrees, but no relief after 2 months of treatment, other chiropractor says back is 5 inches out of line. I think Ill try the prilosec for a few weeks. If anyone has any other ideas, please share, docs are guessing , I think.

Pain: Left side, below rib cage. Several possibilities including:

Stomach
Spleen
Colon
Liver
Pancreas
Muscles

I had a colonoscopy last week and ended up in the ER. NO - not a nicked or ruptured colon; my result was negative (good). The 'MoviPrep' stuff that causes severe diarrhea to cleanse the colon depleted nearly all my potassium (I was 1.7, normal is 3.5 to 5.2) and threw me into atrial fibrillation (severely erratic heart beat, elevated heart rate, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, shortness of breath etc.) After 9 hours of treatment including potassium replacement, blood tests, x-rays and blood thinners, I am back to normal, but with a 30 day heart monitor attached to my belt. Thank God I developed no clots. That plus today's Echocardiogram must be up in the thousands of dollars.

Bottom line: ALL tests involved risk no matter what the docs tell you. I was the unlucky one........

Ditto - burning pain below, not behind, my left rib cage that hurts less when I stand than when I'm lying down. I just had a negative colonoscopy, so I know it's not a bowel problem. No anemia. What could it be.

Try to get a saliva test and ask what they have found. Doctors do not know what anything is really. They are taking an educated guess. they have been taught to treat symptoms, not find what it is. They are as frustrated as most of us are. Try alternative methods. And unfortunately doctors have to go by the rules of our insurance companies.

I attended a holistic medicine doc. Dr. Gary Kaplan, internist, pain doc and acupuncturist in 2008 (now in Maclean, Virginia). When I reported this pain to him, he told me what it was. It had something to do with gastritis and problems with digestion-don't remember if gall bladder or pancreas. The condition has a specific name-I just don't remember what it is-one of my many issues is memory haziness. However, I am sure you can go online to the The Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine and ask them and they will tell you what the condition is, what to ask your doctor to test, and how to treat it. Ask specifically for Dr. Gary Kaplan to answer the question.

Hi, because of the same symptoms, left side burning under the rib, the last doctor i've seen today said it looks like the 11 or 12th rib sindrom, which does give such symptoms. She gave me a treatment and I'll take it. In a week I will go to see her again. I should mention that this is the 4th doctor I am seeing with this problem, after passing through blood tests, stool tests, eco, urine, parasitic tests which by the have shown that H Pylori bacteria is twice higher the normal. That could be another version in case this treatment fails. I will post here the evolution of this weird thing !

wish you health!

Hey, People:
Almost 2 years ago, I developed this painful, burning sensation, on my lower left side abdomen, just under my rib cage: doubled me over, one night in fact. Strange, scarey and troubling sensation, accompanied by (coincidentally?) trace amounts of blood in my stool.. Now, being a man in his mid-fifties, I of course, thought the very worst (tunors? Cancer?), and of course, did nothing for as long as I could. I kept scheduling appointments with doctors (Gastros...), and cancelling them, not wanting to hear the bad news (I'm afraid you'd better get your affairs in order...). When I finally start seeing Gastroenterologists about this, of course they ALL wanted me to immediately have a colonoscopy, as I was over 50. I'm terrified of being sedated and resisted for months (5 mos., to be exact). All the while, I was doing other things that were good (or better) for me, almost subconsciously: eating more greens, no greasy, fried food, cutting down on coffee; started having a 10 min "chill" time, where I went and hid from EVERYONE (wife, dogs, TV, phone, etc...), and tried not to think about anything. All the while the appointment with the colonoscopy is looming, and I just know they're gonna find some nasty tumour...
Meanwhile I've lost a significant amount of weight,'cause I've scared myself out of eating as much as I need to,(I'm slim, to begin with)from reading (many forums) like this online, and trying to diagnose my self. Had the colonoscopy: not only did they find nothing, said I had the insides of a twenty year old (I saw the pics); disn't even find a polop! I wasn't satisfied, tough, so i tortured myself some more with a complete UPPER GI Series (yeah, that's a lotta fun...)Know what they found? That's right :Notta goddamn thing; Funny, though: when I walked out of the office on that warm spring day in 2010, I felt like a million bucks: sensation omes back ever now and then, and I take a more careful look at all I'm doing, thinking, eating, etc. After a while it goes away. Over 85% of ALL visits to the to treat patients are for self-limiting, non life-threatening issues. Don't psych yourself into a bad place. By all means, visit an MD: but don't accept their word as gospel. They never want to say: Hey, buddy: beats the hell outta me what's vexing your gut...

I've had a central burning pain below my ribs but it feels deep and sometimes to the left. I've been told if its on the right it could be gallbladder. My doctor told me it could be too much stomach acid, a partial blockage or constipation in upper colon or pancreatitis.
My pain came on quick with a severe, sharp burning in the upper left side. It has never gone away....just became more spread across to the center. It gets worse after I eat or drink anything. Antacids can knock the edge off but only slightly. I had a blood test for pancreatitis. I am praying it is not that cause he says the treatment is to not eat or drink anything for awhile...didn't have the guts to ask how long! He said acute pancreatitis would include a fever and throwing up....I am feel qeezy but have not thrown up...the way it feels it would eat thru my esophagus! He said the acute kind requires a hospital stay to give you the nutrition you need to not eat or drink for an extended time. He said people who drink alcohol a lot get this...(not me)! Also can be brought on by gallstone passing.... I will post my results tomorrow.
This is miserable I feel for everyone experiencing severe pain.... Espically of unknown source....so scary.

"I am praying it is not that cause he says the treatment is to not eat or drink anything for awhile."

Not to worry, He is suggesting this for the test, it is only the night before you get tested. First and most important, drink a lot of water every day-- at least four pints a day.

Secondly, try to manage all your stressful situations by either solving them or getting rid of them. It is very important to boost up your self-esteem.

Third, walk, jog or exercise on a daily basis.

Fourth, cut down fatty and fried foods and have a normal diet which includes green vegetables regularly.

Also, I located this chart to assist you in finding your issue or at least having a general idea what it might be. Always listen to your Dr. Here is the link to copy and paste:

It sounded like Irritable Bowel Syndrome to me, but I am not sure.

Good luck, and I will look forward to hearing your results, and wish you the best. Happy Holidays.

For over a year, I've had one & off burning pain in left side below rib cage which has radiated to lower back. Going to doc, again, tomorrow.
so far from my doc visits & internet reading, it may be related to my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (something that is hard to diagnose and once diagnosed, is assumed to be culprit of everything and docs may not check other possibilities) called Splenic flexure syndrome(apparently, the splenic flexure is a spot on the colon). Unrelated to my IBS, I will also ask doc to check my spleen (which is in general area).
I know i'm all over the place but these things are so difficult to diagnose and any leads, no matter how seemingly far-flung, sometimes can help.
Hope you all figure out what ails you and get better!

Hi, i've been experiencing a kind of pain at the left upper back side at the level of the bicep and it's really being discomforting and some times it's like a burning sensation that spreads down on the same left side and presently i get very week even in the morning when i ougth to be more strong because of a good night rest. The pain gets even much more after a meal and feels the pains more as if theer is a contact between an injured internal part or organ with the expanded stomach as a result of being full! Kindly help me please, anyone, anybody!!!

Costochondritis is a problem that they said I had, its associate with fibermyalga. Mine is lower than alot of you describe. They say that it is caused by the inflamed place where the rib connect. mine is very low rib and almost under my rib. The doc said its usually higher so i am going for an xray
Angie, did you have the xray and if so what did they find? I have the burning, aching sore to the touch under my left rib cage.. the very last rib.

I have this pain that comes and goes in the right and left side juss below the ribs ,sometimes its a sharp pain and sometimes juss slight pain ialso have noticed that my bowel movements are sometimes in regular like sometimes ill go 5 days or so without a bowel movement, and sometimes there is blood in my stools its like im constipated never diareha though. I have had this pain since shortly after i was 18 years old and now i am 21 going on 22 in a few mths ive had ultra sounds for gallstones, kidney stones, and gallbladder, and it isnt liver or kidney infection cuz ive had tests done at the hospital, i know iam not pregnant, and it isnt my appendix.

I have done some research my self and have a feeling that it may be I.B.S (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but not sure it could also juss be an bowel disorder or and ulcer is what a doctor has told me and sum doctors tell me its acid reflux or gerd but it doesnt feel like that and why wud that effect my bowel movements or pain in the right and left side juss below the rib cage area?

I also have realized that when im on my mentrual cycle that if i get the pain during that time it is more severe with the cramping that is goin on during the monthly cycle. i am waiting now to hear from the hospital about getting scoping done, a doctor has reffered me i juss hope they figure out what it is cause no one should have to live years with abdominal discomfort cause it truly does hurt.

I have tried different pills for couple years now perscribed by doctors that havent helped and the discomfort of certain movements u make well having this pain is aweful or when u feel u cant even get outta bed because u have to lay there in a fetal position with a pillow crunched into ur stomach and feel like u have no energy to do anything without being in pain my pain comes and goes so strangly cuz i could go 2 months without then al of a sudden it is back or a couple weeks then its back or juss a few days it is realy hard to determin when it comes and goes.

so if anyone has any feedback for me on what they may think it could be it would be greatly appreciated to hear about it.

My doctor told me that over half of my left kidney is scar tissue. I am in a great deal of pain and the doctors can't find out why. I'm starting to feel like they thinks its all in my head. I am tired of feeling this, its really making me hate life. does anyone have any similiar situations that may help me and drs find out what it is?

It can't be the gall bladder causing the problem because I had mine removed several years ago and have had these symptoms before and after the gall bladder was removed. I was told that it could possibly be shingles! I'll research shingles a bit more and reply later on what I find out.

I have had swelling and burning under my left rib cage for quite some time. Last year I had a CT scan, blood work and showed everything normal. So I tried to live with it and ignore it. It is now back full force and I cannot ignore it anymore. I went to the ER last week it was so bad. They took chest xray, did a sonogram, urine test and all normal so they sent me home and told me if it gets worse I should have a CT scan. Well it is worse...keeps me up at night my dr. told me to take nexium, and zantac every day. It is not any better. I am getting worried because it has to be something causing this. Now finally my dr. has ordered a CT scan.

Has anyone tried massage therapy? There's a lot of explanations for burning but if doctors aren't coming up with an answer/diagnosis, one reason could be adhesions in your ribs. It is common for connective tissue (ex. tissue that surrounds organs, keeps them in place, and helps with cushioning and support) to build up in areas causing pain. in particular when it happens to rins it can be painful, you may have a difficult time (or harder time) breathing, and yes burning in the area.

If you feel the rib area (just the rib not pushing too hard but maybe back and forth across the area) abd it's tender this may be the cause. it may be painful as a massage therapist helps to loosen the connective tissue, but in one session you should be able to tell a significant difference: breathing clearer abd more deeply, lessened or elimination of burning sensation.

Hope this helps some of you.

Im also having pain on my left side. It feels like someone pumped stomach acid into my side. Its just under my rib cage & wraps around to my back. Hurts alot when I try to lean back. Occasionally it gets really bad for like 5-10 seconds. Iv had indigestion before & it feels alot like that with how bad it burns, but its down by my spleen instead of in my esophogus. Its really hard to lay down & sleep so if anyone has any ideas id appreciate it. I dont have insurance & cant afford to see a doctor.

Every year for three years now I get Winter itch from dry skin and I at the same time I get a buring pain on my left side at the bottom of my rib cage. last night it hurt and burned so bad it woke me up at 3:10 am. I've read a hundred comments on here and it seems there is no answer to the cause of ths. I wonder why it always comes only at this time of year along with the Winter itch. I cold wet washcloth applied to the spot helps the burn relief but only for a while. It is also worse at night like the itchy skin. I would love to know the cause of it.

My mother says it could be gall bladder, however i think it's probably something to do with the stomach lining or nerves. I've been experiencing it all morning, and twice before now in the morning. It's getting so bad that i can't focus on anything else. I suggest anti-inflammatory medicine, or drinking peppermint tea if you can't take painkillers like me.. if you have any damage to your digestive system already (injuries like stab wounds, pressure injuries or years worth of perscription drug abuse) it's probably a result of that. Though i am certainly not a doctor, so don't rely on what i say to be true. Good luck

Like many of you I too have a burning pain just under my left ribs and it is very annoying. My physican keeps telling me it's constipation, however the other day I ate something and it instantly made it worse. Sorry doc, just don't think it's from constipation.

Remember, doctors are practicing medicine and you and I are the lab rats they "practice" on. Wouldn't it be nice after all those visits if we could get some honest and direct answers.

I also suffer from anxiety panic attacks and what really helped me alot was to identify them right when they begin and to do deep breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. I also will them do something that has me thinking In a different direction. I try to avoid the negative thoughts that lead me into thinking my heart is going to pop out and I will die! I usually have these while driving but since I have been watching myself and seeing the signs of dissociation... Which comes befire attacks. Counter it with things that are about present day positive events. Self talk goes a long long wAy.

In fact I can go a month or two with no pain in my side but when it happens it hurts like hell. I am on narco for other problems and wonder if they could be responsible for the burning in my left side! I guess I better inform my doctor, since this post is all questions and statements without any answers!

Thanks!
I actually would agree this could've been it. Would make sense. I might get mine checked out. Cause I have had shoulder surgery that is rare where the orthopedic surgeon attached my shoulder blade to my rib cage and its called a spinal fusion because I have muscular dystrophy. It helped my arm be able to lift even though it was weakened by muscle wasting. But I'm guessing a lot of straining it moving and organizing things and exercising with weights has or could have done something. Cause I felt spasming last year or the year before because I moved to heavy or too many things and might have strained a muscle. So now the pain is burning under my left rib cage and could be more straining on the muscle or cartalidge. I suppose for now hear wrap would help.:)(the surgery was on my left shoulder FYI)

I have had ct scan, colonoscopy, EDG and xray, blood test & urine test. so, far I have been diagnosed with Gastritis. I have been taking prilosac for a month and a half. I have two more weeks of that. But, I still have the pain??? Can someone please help me??? Is it normal to have that pain? I just saw my gi doctor and he does not know what it is? He says the gastritis should be getting better by now. i do not know what to do? What could it be? some days I feel ok, even though the pain is there. and some days, it hurts so bad. I just want to lie down and not do anything. I am really depressed.

Everyone of you should start eating organic and look into genetically modified foods , I know it sounds like science fiction but the fact remains since that company " Monsanto " has been genetically manipulating our food humanity has faced and continues to face some of the most awful diseases and conditions.
I too am going through the left side burning issue
I've noticed that avoiding caffeine and eating organic work wonders.
Get the information out to the people you know and love.
85% of the mainstream food found in your grocery stores contain genetically modified ingredients.

Stay away from Tylenol
Look up what the main ingredient is

If anyone gets any answers I would love to hear them! I have pain and deep itching under left ribs. Back ache. Nausea. Often after I eat or a bowel movement I hurt under both ribs and back. I have had gallbladder ultrasound, bloodwork checking liver, x rays on back, endoscopy and colonoscopy. All good, which is great news but I continue to struggle almost daily, help!!!

@ Paul, your symptoms are similar to mine, I had sharp pains below my left rib cage which turned into a burning sensation. I am being treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, I was concerned about it, therefore, I was given a CTscan which mitigated any problems with my gallbladder, spleen and pancreas. My doctor, therefore, diagnosed "stomach acid", I was prescribed Omeprazole 10mg, it is working and after 6 days my pain has nearly gone away.

Have severe pain in lower left ribs. Very painful to touch. Similar to inflamed muscles. Hurts to cough or do anything that involves those muscles. I don't remember doing anything to irritate that area other than a little archery, which means a heavy pull and raking our yard. Pain has not let up for 4 days. Have been taking Motrin and using hot and cold pads on the area. Frustrated.

In my particular case, the pain in my left-side (mainly below the ribs, but also further down in the left side) has pretty much stopped now after 4 months (almost!) without grains. Been reading about the bad effects of grains in our bodies for the past couple of years, and I just had to try it - and it has definitely made a difference (or something else made the difference during the past 6 months?- I simply cannot be 100% sure...). Read more about grains and how it relates to your health: http://primaldocs.com/opinion/eating-whole-gr... andhttp://www.health-nutrition.co/how-grains-are... (and a thousand other places - just search....). Give it a try and see if your body also doesn't like grains, and report back to this thread.

D'oh! Sorry for the typo. Shouldn't have said 6 months. I have only been (almost) without grains for the past 4 months.

I'm Randy I have a pain pump replaced and the operation didn't good and I ended up losing my pump. After the pump was out and the infection was going I was able to get a new pump was put in. But my pain has never left and after the surgery the Doctor said my surgery he told me that the smell of my stomach was terrible. And know it's been three months and the pain is so bad I can't sleep anymore and when I do I wake up all the time. The pain was just in my back but now it's got so bad it's coming around to the left front of my rib cage. The pain medication is not helping at all. The pain is getting the best of me.
